Finding Your Place—and Your Purpose—in Wheat Ridge
From an early age, I’ve felt a calling to be part of something bigger—to help, to connect, and to contribute. Even back in high school, you could find me climbing into a tractor during harvest season, helping neighbors bale hay before the deadline hit. When people needed an extra hand, I was there.
That same drive followed me to college. After the devastating 1988 Yellowstone fires, I joined a firefighting crew in Cascade, Idaho. I’ll never forget the feeling of flying by Huey helicopter into the mountains, working side by side with thousands of others determined to protect the land we loved. It was exhausting, inspiring, and unforgettable—and it taught me the power of showing up for your community.
No matter where I’ve lived, that lesson has stayed with me. In Las Vegas, I coached Little League and volunteered in schools to teach kids about city planning. In Fort Collins, I served on the Parks and Recreation Board. And when I settled in Wheat Ridge, I found my place through Wheat Ridge 2020 (now Localworks), the Planning Commission, and ultimately City Council.
Just this weekend, while canvassing on the east side of District 2, a resident asked me about ways to get involved here in Wheat Ridge. We had a great conversation about programs like Wheat Ridge Speaks, Let’s Talk Wheat Ridge, and What’s Up Wheat Ridge—all ways to stay informed and engaged. I could see in them the same spark I’ve always felt: the desire to make a difference.
If you’ve ever felt that pull to be more connected—to meet your neighbors, to shape the future of our city, or simply to lend a hand—follow it. That’s how strong communities are built. And if you’re not sure where to start, reach out to me. I have plenty of ideas!
In fact, the Renewal Wheat Ridge currently has three at-large seats open right now, and many of the boards and commissions have openings, waiting for passionate community members to step up. Maybe one of them is yours.
